How It Started — My First Meta Ads Campaign

My name is Abrar Ali — Abrarr Tallks. I am a web designer, SEO expert and Meta ads specialist based in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.

The first Meta ad campaign I ever ran was for a travel agency client in Kashmir. The brief was simple: "Get us enquiries from people who want to visit Kashmir." The budget was ₹5,000. The result was 47,000 impressions, 38 clicks, and zero enquiries.

I had done everything wrong. Wrong audience. Wrong creative. Wrong objective. The ad was seen by tens of thousands of people who had no intention of travelling anywhere. Money spent on eyeballs, not intentions.

That failure taught me more about Meta advertising than any course or tutorial ever did.

I spent the next three months studying every aspect of Meta Ads Manager — campaign structure, audience targeting layers, the difference between awareness, consideration and conversion objectives, how the Meta pixel works, what A/B testing actually means in practice, and how to read the data that comes back. Then I ran the same type of campaign again. The result was 12,400 impressions, 284 clicks, and 23 direct WhatsApp enquiries from people who specifically wanted Kashmir travel packages.

Same budget. Totally different result. The difference was targeting.

What Meta Ads Actually Are — The Foundation

Meta Ads are paid advertisements that appear on Facebook and Instagram — the two largest social platforms in India by active users.

India has over 400 million Facebook users and over 350 million Instagram users. Of these, a large portion are actively searching, researching, and making purchasing decisions — including travel bookings, website enquiries, product purchases, and service contacts.

Meta's advertising platform is one of the most powerful targeting tools ever built. Unlike Google Ads — where you target based on what someone is searching for — Meta Ads target based on who someone is: their age, location, income level, interests, behaviours, life events, and previous interactions with your business.

Done correctly, this means your ad appears only in front of the exact people most likely to be interested in what you are offering — before they even know to search for it.

Done incorrectly — as I discovered with that first campaign — it burns budget reaching people who were never going to care.

The Three Things That Determine Every Meta Campaign's Success

After running dozens of campaigns across travel, hospitality, e-commerce and local business categories, I have concluded that three factors determine whether a Meta campaign succeeds or fails:

  1. Audience targeting — are you showing your ad to the right people?
  2. Creative quality — does your ad stop the scroll and communicate the right message?
  3. Offer clarity — does the person seeing the ad immediately understand what they are being offered and what to do next?

Everything else — budget, placement, bidding strategy — is secondary to these three. Let me go deep on each one.

Audience Targeting — The Core of Everything

Meta's targeting capabilities are extraordinary. Here is how I structure audience targeting for different types of campaigns:

1. Geographic Targeting

This is the first layer. For a travel agency in Kashmir targeting domestic Indian tourists, the geographic targeting is not Kashmir — it is the origin markets. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh, Amritsar. Cities with high per-capita income, high travel frequency, and existing cultural familiarity with Kashmir as a destination.

For international campaigns — targeting tourists from UAE, UK, USA, Singapore — geographic targeting shifts to those countries, focused on Indian diaspora communities who have strong cultural reasons to visit J&K.

Getting the geography right eliminates 80% of wasted spend immediately. You are not paying to show a Kashmir holiday ad to someone in a remote village who has never considered travelling. You are showing it to people in cities who book travel on their phones.

2. Demographic Targeting

Age and income are the primary demographic levers for travel campaigns:

3. Interest-Based Targeting

Meta's interest targeting allows you to reach people based on what pages they follow, what content they engage with, and what categories Meta's algorithm has placed them in. For travel campaigns in India, the interest layers I use most effectively:

4. Behavioural Targeting

Meta can identify people based on their actual behaviour — not just interests they claim to have. The behaviours I target for travel campaigns:

5. Custom Audiences and Lookalike Audiences

Once a campaign has run and gathered data, the most powerful targeting tool becomes available: Custom Audiences and Lookalikes.

A Custom Audience is built from people who have already interacted with your business — visited your website (tracked by the Meta pixel), watched your video ads, engaged with your Instagram posts, or are in your existing customer contact list.

A Lookalike Audience is Meta's AI-generated audience of people who are demographically and behaviourally similar to your existing customers or website visitors. If your Custom Audience is "people who enquired about our Kashmir tour packages," a 1% Lookalike Audience finds the 1% of India's Facebook user base most similar to those people. This is consistently the highest-performing targeting method I use.

Campaign Structure — How I Build Every Campaign

Every Meta campaign I run follows the same three-level structure:

Campaign Level — Objective

The campaign objective tells Meta's algorithm what outcome to optimise for. The objectives I use most:

Ad Set Level — Audience and Budget

The Ad Set is where targeting lives. I typically run 3–4 ad sets per campaign, each targeting a different audience segment. This lets me see quickly which audience is responding best and allocate budget toward the winner.

For a ₹10,000/month travel campaign, a typical structure might be:

Ad Level — Creative and Copy

At the Ad level, I run 2–3 creatives per ad set to A/B test. The creative formats that work best for Kashmir travel:

Ad Copy — What Actually Gets People to Click

Ad copy for Indian travel audiences follows a consistent pattern that I have refined through testing:

The biggest mistake I see in travel ad copy in India is being too vague. "Visit Beautiful Kashmir" is not a call to action. "7 nights Kashmir package from ₹18,999 — WhatsApp for free quote" is.

What I Have Learned from Running Real Campaigns

Four years of running Meta campaigns has produced a set of hard-won lessons that no course teaches:

1. The First 3 Days Are the Learning Phase — Do Not Touch the Campaign

Meta's algorithm needs 3–5 days to exit the learning phase and start optimising delivery. The biggest mistake new advertisers make is panicking at day 2 and changing the targeting or budget. Patience in the first phase produces dramatically better results in weeks 2–4.

2. Retargeting Is Always the Highest ROI Campaign

People who have already visited your website or watched your videos are 5–10x more likely to enquire than cold audiences. The ₹2,000 I spend retargeting warm audiences consistently outperforms the ₹8,000 I spend on cold targeting. Always retarget. Always.

3. WhatsApp Beats Every Other CTA in India

I have tested call buttons, website link buttons, form fills, and WhatsApp buttons across dozens of campaigns. WhatsApp CTA wins every time in the Indian market — by a large margin. Indians trust WhatsApp as a communication channel in a way they do not trust forms or cold calls. Build your ad flow around WhatsApp.

4. Creative Fatigue Is Real — Refresh Every 2 Weeks

Meta shows your ads to the same people repeatedly. After 10–14 days, the same creative loses effectiveness sharply — the frequency goes up and the click rate goes down. Fresh creative every 2 weeks maintains performance. This is the most consistently overlooked factor in long-running campaigns.

5. Broad Audiences Often Beat Narrow Ones

Counter-intuitive but true: in 2024 and 2025, Meta's AI has become good enough that giving it a broad audience and a clear conversion objective often outperforms heavily detailed targeting. The algorithm finds the right people inside the broad audience better than a human can hand-pick them. I now test one broad ad set against my detailed targeting sets in every campaign — and the broad set wins more often than you would expect.
